SSC 6626 - The Politics of Latin America
This course focuses on the profound changes (political, economic and social) that are presently transforming the nations of Latin America. This course explores and analyzes the precise nature and dimensions of these changes. It examines the various routes (military-authoritarian, civilian-democratic, etc.) to modernization undertaken by Latin American nations. A special concern of the course is the role of the United States in this part of the world, the implication of this and the response of the US to accelerating pressures for change. The course also focuses on Latin American political economy and economic development. Theoretical models and case studies are considered in detail.
