SSC 6624 - Contested Value:Dev Amer Polit
The objective of this course is to identify the core political values (liberty, equality, democracy, etc.) at the heart of the American experience, and trace their development over time and in response to changing external conditions (i.e---the rise of capitalism). The class aims to demonstrate how these values are contested, how their substance is never fixed, but rather reflects a response to political and ideological battles, and are a reaction to external events and changes. In the process it provides the larger course of American history with a narrative structure and moral content.
