EDH 6511 - Integ Soc St & Lang Arts 1-6
The students will be expected to develop two major units: one will be geared to grades 1-2: the second will encompass grades 3 to 5 with an extension to grade 6. These units will meet the New York State Language Arts and Social Science Standards. By the completion of the course, the student will be cognizant of all the strategies to be utilized to guarantee the literacy of each K through 6 student. In addition, teaching Social Studies and the importance of multiculturalism will be examined in our democratic and technologically integrated society. The two major units developed will reflect a multidisciplinary approach that integrates the Social Studies and Language Arts standards using cohesive, comprehensive teaching strategies, taking into consideration the learning styles of the students. Clearly identified rubrics will be utilized to evaluate the quality of the learning experiences developed. For this course, the graduate student's field experience will encompass 20 hours. It is expected they will be able to teach lessons from the two units developed, with children. [2 lecture hours and 3 mornings of fieldwork each week for a semester in classes serving grades 1 through 6]. Prerequisites: EDH 5385, EDH 5370, EDH 5351, EDL 5500. Corequisite: EDH 6378. Childhood/Early Childhood Dual Certification Program Majors: Prerequisites: EDH 5370, EDH 5351, EDL 5500, EDS 5402. Corequisite: EDH 6378.
