EDH 6506 - Mthd for Readers Special Needs
This course continues the work of EDA 6513 by further addressing how to meet the literacy needs of middle childhood and adolescent learners. The teacher candidates enter the course with an extensive understanding of students' diverse literacy needs in inclusive classes, having previously mastered theories of reading, writing, listening, language acquisition and literacy development. This course concentrates on the methodologies used to achieve literacy goals and requires teacher candidates to work individually with one adolescent and one middle-childhood youngster in a tutoring/teaching capacity. Under expert supervision, candidates provide competent individualized instruction in order to enhance their students' strengths in language acquisition and literacy development. They remediate specific needs in listening, speaking, reading, writing, and reasoning skills so that all students are better able to maximize their potential and become competent, independent language learners. Teacher candidates are required to demonstrate understanding of the use of similar strategies throughout grades levels. "Broader and deeper" weekly seminars examine current research in the field and its application to student progress. The candidates' professional role as 21st century educators/facilitators continues to be emphasized in conjunction with the national professional standards and the New York State Standards for Teaching and Student Learning and Language Arts. Prerequisite: EDH 6505 or EDA 6513. Adolescence Dual Certification track: Prerequisite:EDA 6513.
