EDA 6513 - Mtg Read & Write Need Grd 5-12
This course is designed for teacher candidates in the middle childhood and adolescent education program. It introduces candidates to the theories of language acquisi- tion and general literacy development and the practice of teaching reading, writing and listening skills to diverse learners. Participants review varied theoretical frameworks to gain in-depth understanding of assessment and program planning for learners in the above mentioned areas. Those enrolled in the course maximize their skills by selecting one student with diverse learning needs to receive in-depth testing in reading, syntax, spelling, comprehension and writing in order to form an assessment of the student's literacy development. Teacher candidates then plan appropriate programming and further evaluation. These activities help develop proficiency in candidates' analytic- reflective skills as they link assessment with learning strategies in language acquisition and literacy develop- ment by native English speakers and English language learners. All candidates will demonstrate competence in designing and implementing assessment and remediation, as well as conduct evaluation of diverse learners in the areas of reading acquisition, writing, reasoning and listening. The course emphasizes national professional standards and the New York State Standards for Teaching and Student Learning and Language and furthers candidate understanding of their professional role as facilitators of student learning and achievement in classroom.
