EDA 6362 - Adv Meth Tch Inc Class gd 5-9
This course is the second of three methodology courses that prepares candidates to work effectively with diverse populations of students. As a co-requisite, candidates are assigned to host schools, grades 5-9 for 8 hours a week. Whenever possible a portion of the field experience will be grades 10-12 with at least one half of the time spent with with inclusion classes. Each section of EDA 6362 is content specific, taught by a master practitioner in that content area who integrates course content with the candidates' experiences in the field. Candidates will become versed in New York State curriculum and standards that governs the instruction in the specific content area and will be required to write unit plans for grades 5 to 9 that stimulate the diverse interests of students in inclusive classrooms. Candidates will integrate technology while presenting assigned lessons in the seminar. These presentations require the candidates to demonstrate effective instructional practices such as differentiated instruction, questioning skills, cooperative learning, providing efficient help, and individualized instruction. The course includes both formal and informal methods of assessing learning as a means of analyzing one's own teaching practice and modifying instruction. After a review of the classroom management strategies discussed in EDA 5153 this course broadens the discussion of classroom management to include managing severe and chronic problem behaviors and more extensive interventions such as individual contracts, conferences, demerit systems, and problem solving sessions. Candidates will role-play scenarios in which they will demonstrate their skill in preventing, suppressing, and redirecting misbehavior. Candidates are required to complete a journal that contains their reflections on teaching and management situations experienced in the field. Dual certification track: Prerequisites: EDA 5301, EDA 5152, EDA 6513 or EDL 5500, EDA 5153, EDA 5154.
